Crossroads : On the Trail of the Crusaders

3 x 52' HD

The year is 1095 AD. Heeding the call of Pope Urban II, the First Crusade is launched, and the Christian armies of Europe invade the Holy Land. Their mission: To wrest control of Jerusalem and protect pilgrims on their journey to and from.

Templars, Hospitallers, Teutonic Knights - A new order of warriors, Soldiers of Christ, who wage battles under the directive and blessing of the church. Often through brutal massacres, these Crusaders settle into the new Kingdom of Jerusalem where they build up their fortresses.

But after a century, the holy army that once seemed invincible begins to falter. In 1179, The Crusaders lose the battle of the fort of Jacob to the forces of Sultan Saladin who reclaims Jerusalem eight years later, the turning point in Crusader history. The church's military expeditions continue for another hundred years, but failures only accumulate. In all, the Pope wages eight violent crusades up until 1291, when Muslims capture the capital, Saint John of Acre, marking an end to the holy wars.

Seven hundred years later, what remains of the bloodiest chapter in Christian history?

Archaeological fieldwork, expert interviews, and 3D animation bring the epic saga of the Crusades and the Holy Land to life. From the ancient crusader capital buried under the cobblestones of the city of Acre, to the secrets unearthed in a recently discovered cemetery in Atlit, to the remains of the Templar fortresses and underground lairs, we'll follow in the footsteps of the Knights of the Levant.
